Annemie’s fields of research are development economics, game theory and applied econometrics. For her PhD, Annemie is studying the relationships between social networks, inequality and poverty. Annemie’s geographical focus is Asia in general and India in particular for her PhD research.
Annemie has a Master’s in Engineering in Agriculture from the University of Leuven (Belgium – 5 year degree) and a Master’s in Development and International Economics from FUNDP (Belgium – 1 year degree). Before she joined the AEM Department at Cornell, she worked as a researcher in Belgium and abroad. Her pre-PhD research activities include:
- Fieldwork-based research on intensification of rice cultivation in Tanzania
- Research on crop-water interactions in the tropics at the Department of Land and Water Management at the University of Leuven
- Research on contracts between farmers and the industry in rural Romania at the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Economics at the University of Leuven
- Research on energy use in agriculture and on the optimal scale of horticultural farms at the Ministry of Small Enterprises, Traders and Agriculture in Belgium
- Research on resettlement and rural development in Lao PDR as an intern at the United Nations Center for Regional Development in Japan
- Fieldwork-based research at the Institute of Ethnology in Hanoi on multi-stakeholder collaboration in the establishment of a new nature reserve in Vietnam
